The Scenery Preservation Council (SPC) was originally
created by Vermont law in 1965 (Title
10 V.S.A. Chapter 19). It plays a strong leadership role in
the Vermont Byways Program. The Council’s mission is stated
as:
| The Vermont Scenery Preservation Council
shall preserve and enhance Vermont's scenic resources through
planning, education and collaboration with public and private
organizations. |
Through the enabling statute (Title
19 V.S.A. Chapter 25), the Scenic Preservation Council has oversight responsibility for the
1977 Vermont Scenic Roads Law. Activities of the Council include:
§ Review and implementation of
the Vermont Byways Program
- § Education and public awareness of Vermont’s
scenic resources
- § Coordination among stakeholders and
other parties
- § Technical assistance on scenic highway
designation
The Council meets on a
regular basis and oversees the
implementation of the Vermont Byways Program. Members include gubernatorial
citizen appointees from different regions of the state and representation
from the Vermont state agencies of Transportation, Natural Resources,
and Commerce and Community Development.
